Support for LGBT

I found the whole process easy going, and this made it easy to talk to the professional, and also helped me to open up more as I felt I was not being judged. I am a calmer more chilled person, ready for whatever a relationship throws at me but I am also now able to identify what is bad for me and have the self-confidence to walk away if I want to.

Mr S, Relate Relationship Counselling Client

Relate relationship counselling is for all LGBT people. Relate can help you begin to fix any relationship problems you might be facing, no matter how big or small. We can also help you if you are separating or divorcing, whether you want to try to rebuild your relationship, or to part amicably and healthily. Relate counsellors do not judge and help find the way forward, at your own pace.

What Can I Expect in Counselling?

You can expect to be helped by a supportive and non-judgmental counsellor either at a local Relate Centre near your home, or you might see a counsellor in school.

You can be referred by a teacher, social worker, or you can ask to see a counsellor yourself – what you say is confidential, unless the counsellor is worried for your safety.

We don’t pretend to know everything about anyone’s relationship or experiences, but we can say that we will work with you without judging or presuming things about you.  People often find that talking things through with a counsellor really helps them and their relationships.  You can talk through how the commitment of entering a Civil Partnership might affect you, how to manage a break-up, how outside pressures are impacting on your relationship or anything else that is an issue for you.  For more about Relationship Counselling please see our section on Relationship Counselling.

How Can Relate Counselling Help LGBT People?

Relate has a wide range of skills and experience in helping lesbian, gay, bi sexual and trans people form and sustain healthy relationships – and a solid track-record of successfully supporting LGBT people.
