Couples Relationship Counsellors

To meet the increasing demand for our couples’ relationship counselling service, we are recruiting qualified couple counsellors who have trained with Relate or elsewhere.

You will be expected to deliver a minimum of 6 hours counselling per week. Sessions may be in the Newcastle office or community venues across Northumberland and Tyneside. Evening work will be required.

Qualified counsellors can begin to work for Relate without additional training if their qualifications meet the Relate Assessment of Prior Experience & Learning (APEL) requirements.

What are the APEL requirements?

To meet the Relate APEL requirements you must have a Relate training qualification or equivalent or 2 years AFT accredited training in Systemic Practice.

If you have no couple counselling experience you can still apply but you will need to undertake some additional training. Please visit the Relate website where you will find all the information you need for next steps.

Your application form will be assessed and you may be interviewed by us. If you meet our requirements for experience, flexibility and availability, your qualifications will be assessed to ensure they meet the Relate APEL requirements.

Family Relationships Counsellors

To meet the increasing demand for our family counselling service, we are recruiting qualified family counsellors who have trained with Relate or elsewhere.

You will be expected to deliver a minimum of 6 hours counselling per week. Sessions may be in the Newcastle office or community venues across Northumberland and Tyneside. Evening work will be required.

Qualified counsellors can begin to work for Relate Centre’s without additional training if their qualifications meet the Relate Assessment of Prior Experience & Learning (APEL) requirements.

What are the APEL requirements?

To meet the Relate APEL requirements you must have a Relate training qualification plus a minimum of 1 year AFT accredited training in Systemic Practice or 2 years AFT accredited training in Systemic Practice.

Young People’s Counsellors

To meet the increasing demand for our young people’s counselling service, we are recruiting qualified young people’s counsellors who have trained with Relate or elsewhere.

You will be expected to deliver a minimum of 6 hours counselling per week. Sessions may be in the Newcastle office or community venues across Northumberland and Tyneside. Evening work will be required.

Qualified counsellors can begin to work for Relate Centre’s without additional training if their qualifications meet the Relate Assessment of Prior Experience & Learning (APEL) requirements.

You will need a Diploma in Counselling plus a post graduate specialist training to work with children or young people.

If you a qualified young people’s counsellor and are interested in joining a dynamic and innovative team please complete and return the application form.

Your application form will be assessed and you may be interviewed by us. If you meet our requirements for experience, flexibility and availability, your qualifications will be assessed to ensure they meet the Relate APEL requirements.

Train as a Relate Counsellor

Our counsellors, sex therapists and trainers help over 1 million people every year and receive regular supervision and support throughout their training and practice.

We offer excellent opportunities for personal growth and development, and provide further training for those who want to specialise in a particular form of relationship counselling such as family counselling, psychosexual therapy or counselling for young people.

Being a Relate Counsellor gives you the chance to have a positive impact on people’s lives and can be incredibly rewarding. Our counsellors receive regular support and supervision throughout their training and practice.

Relate offers excellent opportunities for personal growth and development and offers further training for those who want to specialise in a particular form of counselling such as family counselling, sex therapy or young people counselling.

To become a Relate qualified Counsellor requires 240 volunteer case hours, which can take up to 3 years. Placement offers are dependent on our capacity and your flexibility to work with adult clients in the evening or Saturday mornings in venues across the county.

There are lots of ways you can help your local Relate by volunteering. Relate Centres may be looking for people with time to spare to help with:

  • Working in a Relate charity shop
  • Being a volunteer receptionist or administrator
  • Offering expert support to a Relate Centre e.g. Marketing or Social Media support
