I used to think counselling was for crazy people, probably from seeing stuff on TV, but it’s just talking to someone. My parents were so angry with each other it felt like nobody cared about how I felt, but the counsellor was there every week to listen. Without the help that I was given then, I couldn’t possibly be who I am today. Relate gave me the encouragement I needed to carry on when I was at my lowest point, and I can’t thank them enough.
Wez, Relate Children and Young People’s Counselling Client
Relate Children and Young People’s Counselling is for any young person who is having problems. Our counsellors get what’s going on in young people’s lives and can help you deal with the challenges of school life and growing up. We will listen to you and help you to understand your relationships better, whether they are with parents, peers or teachers.
Counselling lets you talk about how you feel, separate from school and home life and can help you get back to enjoying life.
What Can I Expect in Counselling?
You can expect to be helped by a supportive and non-judgmental counsellor either at a local Relate Centre near your home, or you might see a counsellor in school.
You can be referred by a teacher, social worker, or you can ask to see a counsellor yourself – what you say is confidential, unless the counsellor is worried for your safety.
How Can Relate Counselling Help?
Many of our young clients tell us that they feel happier after they see a Relate counsellor and are better able to deal with their problems. In some cases, the Relate counsellor helped them to concentrate better in their school work, or get on better with their friends and family.
